Daniel Mahua says the milk and meat ban from SA is both a challenge and an opportunity
September 8, 2025
Namibia has officially banned the import of meat and milk from South Africa due to the ongoing outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The Directorate of Veterinary Services has tightened border controls, and this decision comes at a time when South Africa is battling over 270 unresolved outbreaks of the disease, particularly in key cattle farming regions. This move is aimed at protecting Namibia’s livestock industry and ensuring that the country remains free from the outbreak—but it also raises questions about the impact on local farmers, emerging commercial producers, and the broader economy.
To help us understand these implications, joined us is Daniel Mahua, Executive Manager of the Namibia Emerging Commercial Farmers’ Union (NECFU).
