NHE and Swakop sign MOU on housing

Written by on May 8, 2024

The Swakopmund Municipality yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) to address the need for housing and end poverty at the coastal town.

NHE chief executive Gisbertus Mukulu said this was the company’s first MOU and urged other town councils to take a cue from the Swakopmund town council.

Swakopmund mayor Dina Namubes said in her address that she thought the effort would benefit the disabled community members, including street vendors, the elderly, the security department and the media.

She further stressed that banks and other financial institutions only help a specific set of people, as they require pay slips, bank statements and employment confirmations.

As a result, those who are able to pay but are unable to produce the required documents are disadvantaged and left behind.

“This is a really sad and depressing aspect of life, and as the people’s representatives, we must intervene and offer our assistance. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that we cooperate and cross subsidise knowledge, skills, resources and expertise to combat challenges, to learn from one another and improve our service delivery for the benefit of our people,” Namubes said.

She concluded that councillors needs to bear in mind that due to their mandate to perform duties essential for the improvement of their individual towns, they ,as the local authorities, have a significant role to play in the growth of the nation
