Mootu wants explanation for mothers sleeping on the floor at Katutura hospital

Written by on June 11, 2024

Landless People’s Movement chief whip Utaara Mootu wants health and social services minister Kalumbi Shangula to explain how the ministry is dealing with bed and food shortages at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital.

This follows The Namibian’s recent reports that over 60 mothers and their babies are forced to sleep on the floor due to a shortage of beds, while another 50 patients are relegated to tents.

“The conditions at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital are alarming and unacceptable,” she said.

Mootu asserted that the hospital’s unhygienic conditions are a breeding ground for further illnesses.

“Why has the ministry allowed such degradation, what emergency interventions will be enacted to clean up and maintain sanitary conditions?”

Shangula is expected to address these questions at a later stage.
