BIG protest planned

Written by on June 11, 2024

The Basic Income Grant (BIG) Coalition of Namibia has announced that it will take to the streets to demand a universal and unconditional BIG of N$500 per person, per month.

In a statement on Monday, the BIG Coalition said the march is scheduled for 15 June, from the Katutura Youth Complex to Zoo Park in Windhoek’s central business district.

“Namibia lacks decent housing, whereby two million people will be living in shacks within the next seven years,” noted the statement.

In addition, the BIG Coalition highlighted that Namibia is further challenged by a lack of quality education and high failure rate, as well as a lack of decent healthcare.

“The BIG Coalition emphasises that a universal and unconditional BIG is not only a moral imperative but also an economic necessity for Namibia’s future. These are all dehumanising conditions with barbarous consequences, such as increased crime, gender-based and sexual violence, suicides (number one in Africa and 11th in the world), alcoholism, prostitution, etc.”

According to the BIG Coalition, these factors have led to Namibia’s social/moral fabric decay, which is a threat to the country’s peace, security and stability, as evident in the wave of crime engulfing the country.
