US ambassador Randy Berry recently completed a five-day tour of Namibia’s southern region.

Berry said his visit underscored the United States’ commitment to strengthening bilateral trade ties and supporting sustainable development initiatives.

“In conversations with political and business leaders, conservation experts, scientists and entrepreneurs, it’s clear there is tremendous opportunity and potential,” Berry said.

During his visit to Oranjemund, he met with its mayor, Elias Kasemba, and town council members to discuss the growing economic opportunities in the region, emphasising the mining sector’s vital role in Namibia’s economy.

In Luderitz, Berry observed the extensive diamond field that significantly contributes to Namibia’s economic development, at the southern coastal mine.

He commended Kolmanskop on its recent use as a filming location, for the popular series “Fallout”, which has garnered over 65 million views.

He also met with the deputy mayor of Luderitz, Bridgette Fredericks, and members of the town council, with their discussions focussing on the transformative developments in Namibia’s energy sector that are making significant economic changes in the region.

Berry’s visit continued with a trip to the Kelp Blue factory, where scientists are pionering kelp cultivation, with operations covering over four hectares.

In summarising his first trip to the //Kharas region, Berry said that he is thankful to have had the opportunity to spend the week, getting to know the communities and national parks of Namibia’s southern coastal regions.

The visit was aimed at bolstering economic ties and highlighting ongoing conservation efforts between the United States and Namibia.
