Paulus Hawanga dives into the deaths of two minors in the One Nation informal settmentl

April 14, 2025

[PODCAST]

A mother, Saveria Ishidhimbwa, lost her two young children — Elias and Laimi — in a tragic shack fire in Windhoek’s One Nation settlement. The children were home alone for just a few minutes while their older brother went to charge a phone, and Saveria was working a night shift — trying to make ends meet.

But this heartbreaking incident has brought up a critical and uncomfortable question: What are parents supposed to do when they have no one to care for their children — but still need to go to work?

Are there safe spaces in place for minors in low-income areas? Are there community or government-supported options for working parents? And if not — what needs to change?

Joining us was Paulus Hawanga from the National Organisation of Parents in Education
