Lüderitz to host biodiversity action day

Written by on May 17, 2024

Namibia’s national marking of International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) will be held at Lüderitz in the //Kharas region on 22 May, says the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

The global theme for this year’s IDB is ‘Be Part of the Plan’, which is a call to action for all stakeholders to stop and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Biodiversity, according to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), is the term given to the variety of life on earth and the natural patterns it forms. This diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and micro organisms.

Environment minister Pohamba Shifeta will deliver the keynote address at the event.

IDB is marked globally on 22 May every year to mark the adoption of the text of the CBD on 22 May 1992, and provides a unique opportunity to foster wide support for the convention, its protocols and related action frameworks.

Namibia is a part to the CBD, its protocol and related action framework.

The CBD is one of the three global environmental agreements which were adopted at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit. Its objectives are the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the commercial utilisation of genetic resources and related traditional knowledge.

IDB 2024 is expected to increase global efforts to address biodiversity loss in the lead-up to the 16th Conference of the Parties to the CBD, to be held in Colombia from 21 October to 1 November.
