Kalkfeld protesters block entrance to settlement’s office

Written by on May 30, 2024

DISGRUNTLED residents of Kalkfeld settlement in the Otjozondjupa region have blocked the entrance to the council office on Thursday, making it difficult for officials to access and continue with operations.

The group argues that they were forced to take things to the extreme after regional leadership allegedly failed to receive their petition on Wednesday.

The protesters are demanding the regional council to address pressing concerns affecting the community, including water debts and supply, local employment opportunities, solid waste management and sanitation and secrecy around mining operations.

Group leader Mbango Nandova said they will not move until the leadership receives the petition.

“In recent times, our community has been facing persistent challenges that significantly affect our quality of life and well-being. Despite our previous efforts to address these issues through various channels, we have unfortunately seen little to no progress in finding viable solutions,” he said.

Otjozondjupa Regional Council chairperson Marlene Mbakera told The Namibian that she is not in the region and will only be available on Monday to receive the petition.

“I cannot send a representative since this is a political issue. I am told that people leading the protest are not even from Kalkfeld,” she said.
