Iivula-Ithana re-enters oil fields

Written by on May 30, 2024

Swapo’s first woman secretary general and former minister Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana has re-entered the oil and gas industry as the executive chairwoman of Hanahe Trading, Oil and Gas.

Iivula-Ithana confirmed this on her LinkedIn profile two weeks ago. “It’s been a while since I started my role at Hanahe Trading, Oil and Gas (Pty) Ltd as an executive chairwoman, but I wanted to share this update with everyone,” she said. Iivula-Ithana yesterday said she has been in the industry for quite some time.

“The oil and gas industry is not something new for me. There is no story here, and it is not something you can write about,” she said.
The former minister has served in several Cabinet positions.

She was the deputy minister of wildlife, conservation and tourism from 1990 to 1991, the minister of youth and sport from 1991 to 1996, and the minister of lands, resettlement and rehabilitation from 1996 to 2001.She was moved to the position of attorney general on 26 January 2001.

In March 2005, when former president Hifikepunye Pohamba took office, she was appointed as the minister of justice.

Iivula-Ithana was elected as secretary general of Swapo at the party’s November 2007 congress, becoming the first woman to hold the position. Iivula-Ithana and businessman Knowledge Katti were partners in oil and gas company Kunene Energy before it was sold in 2008 to Canadian-listed UNX Energy Corp. Iivula-Ithana has declared the 15% interest she has held in Kunene Energy since 2006 to the parliament.

At the time she complained that Namibia gets the “scraps” of natural resources deals.

Her son Shafa Kaulinge’s company, Amis Energy, holds three exploration licences.
