Fire destroys book storeroom at Walvis Bay area school

Written by on May 24, 2024

Firemen of the Walvis Bay fire department had to travel about 50 kilometres to Utuseb, situated south-east of Walvis Bay, on Thursday night to respond to a fire at JP Brand Primary School.

According to acting fire chief David Ndjuluwa, the police notified the town’s fire station about the fire at around 20h10, and in response firefighting vehicles were sent to the school.

“It was a wooden structure where the school stores books, and where pupils watch television. That is why it burned down so fast,” Ndjuluwa said.

“We found it completely burnt down. The children were already evacuated and assembled at a spot with their belongings.

Luckily it did not spread to the buildings. We stayed there for about an hour to make sure that the fire was completely out,” he said.

Children at the school were watching television when they smelled smoke.

One of the children picked up a book and noticed there was a fire under a pile of books.

No injuries were reported
