City of Windhoek remembers emergency worker who died on duty

The City of Windhoek has described an employee who died in an ambulance accident on Sunday as a team player who always lended a helping hand to his colleagues.

According to City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya, the employee Methusalah Simataa Khama joined the City of Windhoek as a trainee firefighter on 3 March 2008.

“He was subsequently promoted to the position of firefighter on 1 March 2009, a position he held until his passing,” she said.

Amutenya described the deceased as “a gentle soul, often seen with a smile, sharing jokes, and always ready to lend a helping hand.”

She added that he will be remembered fondly as a dedicated team player, known for his friendly demeanour, respectfulness, and strong work ethic.

“Khama Simataa’s departure is a great loss to the City of Windhoek and he will be deeply missed by all of us. We extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the family of our late firefighter during this difficult time,” Amutenya said.

The deceased was driving with a colleague in the ambulance when it crashed into a truck.

Amutenya, who confirmed the accident said the two emergency workers were returning from a call at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital to Maxuilili Fire Station when the incident took place.

She said a team from the municipality was dispatched to the scene to remove the two victims from the wreckage, however, one of them did not survive while the other was admitted to a hospital.

“The Windhoek Municipality Council and the entire staff extends sincere condolences to the family of our deceased colleague during this difficult time. We also wish the colleague recieving medical attention at a local hospital strength and a speedy recovery,” the municipality said in a statement.
Sean Naude of the Namibian Marshall Rangers said the incident happened early on Sunday morning along the Natis road in Windhoek.
