Political analyst calls for regulation of honorary doctorates

Political analyst Ben Mulongeni says Namibia should regulate the awarding and use of honorary doctorates to prevent abuse, favouritism and corruption.

Mulongeni was commenting on concerns raised by Affirmative Repositioning leader Job Amupanda over the growing use of honorary doctorates by politicians.

He says an independent committee could be established to determine who qualifies for an honorary doctorate based on their contribution to society and the common good.

Mulongeni says while honorary doctorates can recognise meaningful contributions outside academia, there is a risk of abuse if the practice is not properly regulated.
