Former Robben Island political prisoner and labour rights advocate Helao Shityuwete has died at his home at the age of 92.
Veteran and former Robben Island prisoner Ben Ulenga says he was shocked and deeply saddened by the death of his former comrade, despite Shityuwete having been unwell for some time. Ulenga describes Shityuwete as one of the leading figures among Namibian political prisoners on Robben Island, saying he played an important leadership role and helped fellow prisoners navigate the challenges of incarceration.
Shityuwete was also known for his commitment to workers’ rights, labour activism and writing, leaving behind a legacy that Ulenga says should inspire Namibia’s younger generation and leaders.
