Political tensions rise over ECN’s decision to cut election travel costs

October 16, 2025

[PODCAST]

With the 2025 regional council and local authority elections fast approaching, political tensions are mounting following the Electoral Commission of Namibia’s decision that political parties and independent candidates must fund their own travel expenses to South Africa, where ballot papers will be printed.

The ECN cited limited financial resources and unexpected expenses, including six by-elections held this year as the reason it cannot cover these costs. However, several political parties have criticised the move, calling it unfair and undemocratic. Some argue that the decision could undermine transparency and public trust in the electoral process.

To unpack the implications of this decision for democracy and accountability, Desert FM speaks to Affirmative Repositioning member of parliament and chief whip Vaino Hangula.
