Court Bid Challenges Namibia–Germany Genocide Deal
August 18, 2025
Namibia’s reckoning with its colonial past has entered a new legal phase. On 7 October, the Windhoek High Court will consider a landmark application to bring Germany into a case challenging the validity of the 2021 joint declaration on the 1904–08 Herero and Nama genocide. Germany frames its €1.1 billion offer over 30 years as a ‘gesture of recognition’ rather than reparations, but Namibian traditional authorities and the Landless People’s Movement argue this sidesteps justice and they now want Germany before the court. To share more the legal, moral, and international ramifications of this development, Desert FM is joined by Professor Reinhart Kessler.
