Nahas Angula unpacks the declassification of Namibia to lower-middle income country
July 4, 2025
We turn our attention to Namibia’s economic downgrade by the World Bank — from an upper-middle-income country to a lower-middle-income country. While this reclassification may, on paper, open doors to concessional loans and aid, it has also triggered critical questions about governance, debt, and the real cost of borrowing.
As some leaders applaud the shift as an opportunity, others are warning that this is no cause for celebration — citing rising national debt, worsening poverty, and unsustainable lifestyles at the top.
To unpack the real implications of this downgrade — and what it means for the future of Namibia’s economy and policy direction — we were joined by Statesperson and former Prime Minister, Nahas Angula.
