Ismael Basson discusses crime in the Omusati region
June 19, 2025
Despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement, crime continues to escalate in Namibia’s rural north, particularly in the Omusati region. With more than 4,500 criminal cases reported from 2022 to early 2023, and over 200 rape cases logged between January 2023 and August 2024, the region faces a serious safety crisis.
OMUSATI regional commander commissioner Ismael Basson says the challenges stem from limited resources, poor terrain, and the absence of actual criminals from community outreach meetings. In this conversation, we explore the strain on the rural policing system, what’s being done, and what communities can do to take control of their safety.
