Jerobeam Shaanika discusses impact of South Africa hosting the G20 summit
June 13, 2025
We zoom out to the continental stage and talk about a momentous shift in Africa’s role on the global platform. The African Union is now a full member of the G20, and for the first time ever, the G20 Summit will be hosted on African soil — right in Johannesburg, South Africa, this November.
Under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability”, South Africa’s G20 presidency is being watched closely — not just as a host nation, but as a voice for the Global South. With mounting pressure to deliver on inclusive growth, food security, and equitable innovation, what does this all really mean for Namibia, and for the continent at large?
To unpack this, we were joined by Namibian diplomat and international relations expert, Ambassador Jerobeam Shaanika. We’ll get his insights on what this moment signifies, and what opportunities — and challenges — lie ahead for Africa as a bloc now sitting at the G20 table.
