George Ampweya unpacks Sinomine temporary suspension of smelting operations which will affect 650 workers

The Mine Workers Union of Namibia (MUN) has formally objected to the Competition Commission over “deteriorating conditions” at the Sino-mine copper smelter in Tsumeb.
MUN General Secretary George Ampweya warned that while workers seek protection, capital interests respond with “tea and hospitality,” implying inaction by the Commission would compromise its integrity.
This follows Sino-mine’s temporary suspension of smelting operations, blaming a global copper concentrate shortage. We were joined by George Ampweya to discuss the union’s concerns and worker impact.
