Naftal Sakaria addresses the 776 000 litres of illegal fuel bust since 2024
June 11, 2025
The smuggling of Angolan fuel into Namibia continues to spiral into a national crisis. In the Oshana region alone, over 776,000 litres of illegal fuel – valued at more than N$17 million – have been confiscated between 2024 and mid-2025. These operations are not only undercutting local businesses, but allegedly involve members of law enforcement and cross-border syndicates. We spoke to Oshana Regional Police Commander, Commissioner Naftal Sakaria, to understand the scale of this illicit trade, the involvement of state officials, and what the police are doing to contain it.
