Junias Shilunga on struggles nurses face amid International Nurse Day celebrations
May 12, 2025
Namibia joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Nurses Day which falls on 12 May every year.
However, this year’s celebrations come at the back of a stark warning by the International Nurses Council that the global nursing workforce is facing an unprecedented crisis with far-reaching consequences for public health systems, national economies, and the future of healthcare.
Nurses—vital to the delivery of quality care—are confronting mounting challenges that compromise their well-being and their capacity to serve patients effectively.
Chronic understaffing, unsafe working conditions, and inadequate compensation have led to widespread burnout, soaring attrition rates, and the migration of skilled professionals to countries offering better work environments.
To shed more light on this, we were joined by the leader of the Namibia Nurses Union Junias Shilunga.
