Unemployed Qualified Teachers’ Joyce Liswaniso calls for urgent change in teacher recruitment practices

September 4, 2025

[PODCAST]

Hundreds of qualified but unemployed teachers have been raising their voices, calling for urgent change in recruitment practices.

Just this week, members of the Unemployed Qualified Teachers group attempted to stage a demonstration at the Ministry of Education in Windhoek, but were told not to proceed. Their demands include the abolition of interviews, which they say place a financial burden on already unemployed teachers, and the introduction of mass recruitment into the public service. The group, led by their National Chairperson, Joyce Liswaniso, insists that they are not afraid of interviews, but argue that the process is costly and unfair to those without a steady income.

To help us unpack the teachers’ frustrations and demands, we’re joined now by Joyce Liswaniso, National Chairperson of the Unemployed Qualified Teachers.
