The Namibian Police have confirmed the deaths of two people in the Zambezi Region on recently, following a canoe accident.

According to Zambezi regional police spokesperson and head of community policing, Kisco Sitali, said the incident took place at Impalila Island, along the Namibia-Zambia border. The canoe’s three occupants were attempting to cross the river from Namibia into Zambia when it capsized.

While one of the occupants, a Zambian national, managed to swim to safety, the other two tragically drowned.

Sitali joins Desert FM to discuss whether there has been an increase in such incidents, what regulations, if any,  govern canoeing in Namibia, and which authorities are responsible for enforcement.
