Simon Namesho unpacks rise in body donations to the School of Medicine

The University of Namibia’s School of Medicine has recorded a remarkable rise in body donation pledges in just the first half of 2025 — more than in the past 14 years combined. But with limited pledges and over 230 unclaimed bodies at Windhoek and Grootfontein mortuaries, questions are being raised: Can unclaimed bodies be used to educate our medical students? What are the ethical, legal, and logistical hurdles? And how many bodies does the medical school actually need each year?
