A storm is brewing at the University of Namibia as students face abrupt eviction from their hostels to make way for international athletes attending the African Union Sport Council Region 5 Games, scheduled from 3 to 14 July. With exams underway, this last-minute move has sparked panic, petitions, and public outcry, especially among students with no alternative housing.
The Student Union of Namibia says the university is “pushing students into desperation,” while students themselves have voiced fears of displacement and disruption during their final exams. But UNAM management says it’s handling the situation with care and has offered to cover relocation, transport, and data costs.
