Omu Kakujaha Matundu unpacks the recently approved 3.8% electricity tariff increase

The Electricity Control Board’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert Kahimise, maintains that the recently approved 3.8% electricity tariff increase is below the current inflation rate—and as such, will have minimal impact on inflation and the cost of goods and services.
His remarks come as Namibia’s inflation stood at 4.2% at the end of March. But questions remain: Will this increase not pile more pressure on already struggling households and businesses?
Kahimise has also acknowledged that while the impact on inflation may be minimal, the tariff hike could slightly dent GDP growth—since electricity costs feed into the broader inflation calculation.
To unpack the implications of this development, we were joined by economist Omu Kakujaha Matundu.
