N$47 Billion in assets, but inequality persists across Namibia

September 29, 2025

[PODCAST]

The state of Namibia’s asset register has come under the spotlight, revealing both the scale of government property ownership and deep inequalities in service delivery across the country.

According to the latest dossier, the government owns immovable assets valued at more than N$47 billion. These range from schools, hospitals, staff houses, hostels, and clinics to boreholes, offices and farms across all 14 regions.

Yet, behind these impressive figures lies a story of unequal distribution. Regions such as //Kharas and Khomas have hundreds of staff houses while Kavango West has only seven. The imbalance extends to schools, hostel’s and clinics — leaving rural learners and health patients at a disadvantage.

To help unpack these disparities and the reforms underway, Desert Radio spoke to the Minister of Works and Transport Hon. Veikko Nekundi, who is at the  center of the government’s custodianship of these assets.
