Mmusi Maimane unpacks President Cyril Ramaphosa placing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on an immediate leave of absence

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on an immediate leave of absence following serious allegations linking him to organised crime.
In a live televised address to the nation on Sunday, President Ramaphosa also announced the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the claims—allegations he said undermine the Constitution and pose a threat to national security.
But questions are now being raised:
Has President Ramaphosa taken the easy way out by calling for a commission, instead of firing Mchunu outright?
Are these decisions truly in the best interest of the country—or is Ramaphosa playing it safe to avoid political fallout, particularly from the influential Zulu constituency to which Mchunu belongs?
To help unpack these developments and what they mean for South Africa’s political landscape, we’re joined by the leader of Build One South Africa, Mmusi Maimane
