Lifalaza Simataa unpacks the idea of a joint 2029 presidential candidate

May 27, 2025

[PODCAST]

The road ahead for Namibia’s opposition parties, as conversations begin to swirl around a possible united front in the 2029 presidential elections.

LPM leader Bernadus Swartbooi recently said he is open to backing a single opposition candidate to take on SWAPO in the next national elections. The idea has received support from other key opposition figures like PDM president McHenry Venaani and official opposition leader Imms Nashinge.

But the road to unity is complex — from deciding who the candidate would be to aligning party ideologies and strategies, not to mention past failed attempts at a unified front.

Joining us to unpack this proposal and what it could mean for the country’s political future is Lifalaza Simataa, spokesperson for the Landless People’s Movement (LPM).
