Kagiso moloi unpacks calls by ministry for private doctors assistance at Katutura Health Centre

June 24, 2025

[PODCAST]

The Ministry of Health and Social Services is appealing to private doctors to volunteer their time after hours at the Katutura Health Centre to help ease mounting pressure caused by the increasing number of patients seeking care at night.

However, the Namibia Nurses Union (Nanu) has warned that expecting private healthcare professionals to volunteer after hours could be “catastrophic,” as it may push them to work around the clock, potentially affecting their well-being and quality of care.

In a notice issued on social media this week, the ministry highlighted that the Katutura Health Centre has, for several months now, been experiencing a sharp rise in the number of patients requiring services at night.

How have private doctors responded to this call? Are they willing to volunteer? And how do they plan to balance this with their private practice obligations?

To help us unpack these questions, we were joined by Kagiso Moloi, a private dentist.
