Freddy Shityuwete reflects on father’s legacy and Toivo ya Toivo tribute

Namibia has turned its attention to a powerful moment of remembrance. Over the weekend, the late liberation icon Andimba Toivo ya Toivo was honored with a statue at Robben Island, during the second reunion of former political prisoners.

In total, six statues were unveiled, commemorating the courage and resilience of those who endured years of imprisonment under apartheid. Among those remembered were Namibians who stood trial alongside Toivo ya Toivo, including Helao Shityuwete.

To reflect on this  honor, the legacy of sacrifice and what it means for future generations Jane Kandetu spoke to Freddy Shityuwete son of the late Helao Shityuwete.
