Currency and Culture Clash: The ‘Outere’ Coin Controversy
August 4, 2025
We now turn our attention to a growing public debate involving the Bank of Namibia and cultural sensitivity around its new N$1 coin. A recent social media post by the Bank referred to the coin using the phrase ‘Outere Dollar’, a term that’s now sparked concerns of tribalism and cultural insensitivity.
Matthew ||Gowaseb, a Khoekhoegowab language consultant and concerned citizen, publicly called out the Bank, saying the term ‘Outere’ has historically been used in a derogatory way and that its use by a national institution undermines the spirit of unity captured in our national motto, ‘One Namibia, One Nation’.
The Bank has since removed the post and issued a statement clarifying its intentions. But has enough been done? What does this incident reveal about how public institutions engage with cultural narratives and how do we move forward?
Joining us now is ||Gowaseb to unpack his concerns and share what he believes should happen next.
