Chloe Brandt discusses the journey to get Uis Town Council status
June 5, 2025
Earlier this week, the Erongo Regional Council told Desert FM that the journey to get Uis Town Council status has begun in earnest. This expected transition will carry both promise and peril: greater local autonomy, new revenue streams, and expanded services, yet also serious risks around land rights, housing, and resource management.
Yesterday, we spoke with Uis native, Chloe Brandt, a researcher at the Legal Assistance Centre who has closely studied the settlement’s history, the proposed town-status criteria, and the community’s readiness. Her draft report, “Uis on the Rise: From Settlement to Town,” outlines both opportunities and urgent challenges that must be addressed.
