Audrin Mathe unpacks Genocide Remembrance Day celebrations

May 20, 2025

[PODCAST]

It has been over a century since the Nama and Herero genocide, one of Africa’s earliest recorded genocides — and one that still shapes Namibia’s historical and political identity. Now, for the first time, Namibia will officially observe a Genocide Remembrance Day, following decades of advocacy and intergenerational trauma.

But what will this day mean for the country? How will it be observed? And what’s the government’s long-term vision for remembering and reckoning with this painful past?

We were joined by Audrin Mathe, executivedirector at the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, to help us unpack what this day represents — and what the public should expect.
