It has been over a century since the Nama and Herero genocide, one of Africa’s earliest recorded genocides — and one that still shapes Namibia’s historical and political identity. Now, for the first time, Namibia will officially observe a Genocide Remembrance Day, following decades of advocacy and intergenerational trauma.
But what will this day mean for the country? How will it be observed? And what’s the government’s long-term vision for remembering and reckoning with this painful past?
