Enoke Kaumba / Radio producer and Presenter

Enoke Kaumba shows

What’s your role at the station? I’m a radio sound producer responsible for the overall sound quality at the station. I’m also part of the sport desk where I write and package sport stories and hourly bulletins.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had while on air? They are many but one that stands out was presenting the Africa Cup of Nations when Namibia qualified for the knockout stages for the first time. Also commentating on the Newspaper Cup after the Covid-19 break in 2022 is a personal highlight.
What’s the best part about working with the team at Desert FM? Waking up every day, living my dream by doing what I love most: telling stories using sound, and getting to share it with different listeners from diverse backgrounds.
What’s something interesting or quirky that listeners might not know about you? When I was young, I’d go to our backyard and replay moments from matches I saw on TV – dribbling, scoring, or making saves – all while commentating like I was live on air. My brothers thought I was crazy, but looking back, that’s where the dream began.
What’s the best concert or live event you’ve ever attended? My first ever live international football game at the Sam Nujoma Stadium – Namibia vs Zimbabwe. The final score was Namibia 1-0 Zimbabwe, Hendrik Somaeb scored a stunner of a goal. And last year’s Mafikizolo concert.
How do you stay on top of the latest trends in music or pop culture? Social media, reading other papers, and keeping up with my networks.
Is there something you’ve always wanted to try on the radio but haven’t yet? Yes, but, unfortunately, it’s not going to happen. I’ve always wanted to interview the late president Hage Geingob about his time playing football.
How did you get into radio, and what drew you to this industry? I started at a small commercial community-based radio station in Rundu, where my love for radio started. I got inspiration from listening to it and the curiosity of wanting to know what goes on behind the scenes kept on growing.
Coffee or tea? Coffee
Early bird or night owl? Night owl
The book or the movie? The book
What’s your go-to karaoke song? Westlife, ‘My Love’
If you could have dinner with any celebrity, who would it be? Robert Marawa
What’s your guilty pleasure song or movie? ‘3 Idiots’
