Havana residents challenge relocation over lack of basic services

August 10, 2026

[PODCAST]

About 50 households along the Havana four-way are facing eviction proceedings as the City of Windhoek moves to clear land earmarked for a new community market, taxi rank and road expansion.

Residents are resisting the relocation, saying the alternative land allocated to them lacks adequate water, electricity and sanitation.

Community activist Michael Amushelolo says residents are not opposed to development, but are challenging the manner in which the relocation is being handled.

He says the city should provide basic services at the new location before forcing families to move.
